Who to Inform When You Change Your Name

Once your deed poll is signed and witnessed, you need to inform the organisations that hold records about you. This includes government departments, banks, your employer and other record holders.

Legal Requirements

Most updates have no deadline, but some are legal requirements.

You must inform the police of your name change within 3 days if you are a registered offender or there are criminal proceedings against you. Failing to do so is a criminal offence in these circumstances.

If you have debts, loans or credit agreements, you must inform your creditors. Your obligations continue under your new name.



You must also keep your driving licence details accurate, so the DVA should be among your first updates.

Government Departments

Driving licence and vehicle registration

In Northern Ireland, the DVA in Coleraine issues driving licences. Apply by post with your deed poll to update your name. There is no fee. See our article on updating your driving licence.



Vehicle registration works differently. The DVLA in Swansea handles vehicle registration for Northern Ireland, so update your V5C with them separately.

Passport

You do not need to update your passport straight away. You can continue using your current one until it expires, as long as any travel you book matches the name on it. Many people update it early anyway, since it's a primary form of identification. See our article on updating your passport.

Birth Certificate

Your birth certificate cannot be updated. It records the details that were correct at your birth. You use it alongside your deed poll when proving your identity, and organisations accept this as normal.

HMRC

Notify HMRC to update your tax and National Insurance records, so your employment records and tax returns are processed correctly.

Benefits

If you receive benefits or Universal Credit, inform the Department for Communities, which administers benefits in Northern Ireland. Your payments may be delayed if your records don't match your identification.

Health Records

Tell your GP surgery about your name change, and they will update your health records. This keeps your prescriptions, referrals and appointments in your correct name.

Rates

Contact Land and Property Services to update your name on your rates account.

Electoral register

The Electoral Office for Northern Ireland manages the electoral register. Update your details with them so your registration matches your identification.

Banks and Financial Institutions

Inform every bank and building society where you hold an account. Most require you to visit a branch or send documents by post, and you'll typically need your original deed poll and photo identification. Each bank has its own process.



Credit card providers need informing separately, even when they're part of the same banking group. The same applies to lenders for any loans or mortgages, and to investment platforms, ISAs, pensions and savings accounts.

Employers and Education

Tell your employer's HR or payroll department so your contract, payroll, pension contributions and tax records are updated.

If you're a student, inform your school, college or university. They'll update your records, student ID and future certificates.

Utilities, Insurance and Everything Else

Update your name with your gas, electricity, phone and broadband providers.



Update all insurance policies, including car, home, life and health insurance. A policy may be invalid if your name doesn't match your identification.

Then work through the rest as it comes up: professional bodies, gym memberships, subscriptions and loyalty schemes.

There's no deadline for most updates, but a sensible order makes the rest easier. Start with your driving licence and bank accounts, since these are primary identification that other organisations accept as proof. Then HMRC, benefits, your employer and insurance.
