A deed poll is a legal document that changes your name. It is the traditional way to change your name in Northern Ireland, and has been in use for over a century.

How a Deed Poll Works

A deed poll is a written declaration that:

  • States your current name
  • Declares your new name
  • Confirms you will stop using your old name
  • Confirms you will use your new name for all purposes

Once signed and witnessed, it becomes legally binding. Your name is changed from that moment.

Legal Status

A deed poll is legally recognised throughout Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. It is accepted by all government departments, banks, employers and other organisations.

Who Can Get a Deed Poll

  • Be 16 or over
  • Live in Northern Ireland
  • Have the mental capacity to understand what you are doing

Registering Your New Name

There is no central register of name changes. You do not need to register your new name with any government body.
