Who Can Change Their Name in Northern Ireland

Almost anyone can change their name by deed poll in Northern Ireland. There are 3 basic requirements.


You must:

  • Be 16 or over
  • Live in Northern Ireland
  • Have the mental capacity to understand what you're doing

Nationality and Citizenship

You don't need to be a British citizen. Anyone who lives in Northern Ireland can change their name by deed poll, including foreign nationals.



You can use your deed poll to update UK-issued documents such as your eVisa and driving licence, and to change your name on your bank accounts and with other organisations.

Age

16 and over

You can change your own name without permission from anyone else. You have complete freedom to choose your new name.

Under 16

Children under 16 cannot apply for a deed poll themselves. A parent or guardian must apply on their behalf, and in most cases everyone with parental responsibility must consent.

Criminal Records

You can change your name if you have a criminal record. There are rules to be aware of:

  • You cannot change your name to evade the law or avoid legal obligations
  • If you're a registered offender, you must notify the police of your new name within 3 days
  • If you're facing active criminal proceedings, you must inform the police of your name change

Debt and Financial Obligations

Debt, bankruptcy, or other financial issues do not prevent you from changing your name. The change doesn't affect what you owe:

  • You must inform your creditors of your new name
  • Your credit file links your old and new names, so your financial history follows you
  • Changing your name does not erase debts or reset your credit history

Mental Capacity

You must be able to understand what a deed poll is and what changing your name means. This requirement exists to protect vulnerable people from making decisions they don't fully understand.
