Does Changing Your Name Affect Your Credit Score?
Changing your name does not affect your credit score. Your credit history stays intact, your accounts keep their records, and nothing resets.
It's a sensible question to ask before you change your name, so here's how it actually works.
How Your Credit File Works
Credit reference agencies track your financial history using several pieces of information together: your name, date of birth and address history. When you change your name, your date of birth and address history stay the same, so the agencies keep your file connected without interruption.
Your old name and new name become linked on your file. Lenders checking your credit see your full history, whichever name they search under.
What Happens When You Change Your Name
When you update your details with your bank and other lenders, they report your information to the credit reference agencies under your new name. Your accounts, loans, credit cards and payment history all carry across, and the change happens automatically as each lender updates.
You do not need to contact the credit reference agencies yourself.
Updating Your Financial Records
To keep your file updating smoothly, inform every organisation that holds your financial records: your bank, credit card providers, loan providers, and mortgage lender. Show them your deed poll as proof of your name change.
For the full list of who to update, see our article on who to inform when you change your name.
Credit Monitoring Apps
If you use a credit monitoring service such as ClearScore or Experian, update your details with them once your lenders have your new name. Some services let you update your name in your account settings, while others may ask you to verify your identity again.
During the transition, your accounts may briefly appear under both names as different lenders update at different speeds. This is normal and settles as the updates complete.
Your Loans and Credit Agreements
Changing your name does not affect the terms or status of any existing loans, mortgages or credit agreements. They continue exactly as before, under your new name, and your obligations continue with them.
When you apply for new credit after changing your name, use your new name on the application. Lenders will see your full financial history. If you apply soon after the change, keep your deed poll to hand, since a lender may ask for it as additional identification while your records are still updating across the system.
